Joan’s fondest memory of Patty Griffin is jumping onstage and dancing with her during Griffin’s 2019 concert at the Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco. Standing in the wings beforehand, Joan could hardly believe this petite woman could have such a big voice, singing with such power and soul.

“She’s blond and teeny, so you don’t think she’s going to come blasting out with a gospel-sounding song like that, but when she gets onstage, the results are pretty astonishing,” Joan says. “She started dancing with me and said later, ‘I wish I could have put the guitar down and just danced with you the rest of the night.”
